CONFERENCES ON THE 100th ANNIVERSARY OF MADRID’S METRO AND ITS INTERNATIONAL INFLUENCE

They are organized by the Faculty of Mining and Energy Engineers at the Technical University of Madrid and by the Spanish Association of Tunnels and Subterranean Works (AETOS).

Mobility in large cities is nowadays considered a key factor for the development of their economic activities, as well as for the well-being of their citizens.

Over the past decades, subterranean metropolitan transport networks have stood out for their effectiveness among the different modes of collective transport.

Construction techniques have been developed in order to work in very sensitive environments, such as those where the integrity of structures and buildings built on the surface could be affected either by the settlements that excavations could possibly cause or by the waves resulting from the vibrations generated by explosives or by excavation machinery.

During these conferences, different topics related to the correct definition of materials and their deformation characteristics will be discussed based on the latest mathematical models, current excavation and construction equipment used for metro tunnels and stations, etc.

It is therefore a conference with a mainly practical focus, in which the most relevant metro projects that are currently being executed in the most important capitals of Latin America will be described and shared. At the same time, there is also the intention of paying homage to the professionals involved in the creation of the Madrid’s first metro line, now a century ago.
